Willing to follow our sweet tooth wherever it takes us, when we saw pictures of the cakes on offer at Mint Cakery we knew we had to get there.
So on Sunday we set off to Point Chevalier and the new venture of the pastry Chef Michelle Bevan and her partner Daren Jarrett (ex-Clooney Chef; designed the Menu at Szimpla Gastro bar).
An unassuming store front on the corner of Point Chevalier and Meola Road, we entered and were greeted with a mouthwatering display cabinet of delectable treats.
Unable to choose we went for the box of 4 for $20 and chose 2 Dark Chocolate and Raspberry, a Lemon Meringue and Sticky Date and Salted Caramel.
The chocolate mousse on top of the cake was absolutely sublime, we could’ve happily eaten a whole bucket load of it on its own. The liquid raspberry centre provided a sharp contrast to the rich, velvety dark chocolate.
The Lemon Meringue with a little crunchy, gooey meringue on top was sticky and full of citrus flavour.
However the standout for us was the Salted Caramel and Date cake which was reminiscent of a carrot cake with the added bonus of salted caramel!
So after the very hard job of spending an afternoon devouring these little beauties, our verdict is: Get yourself in the car and over to Point Chev pronto!
They also sell fresh bread and we have our eye on the Kumara Sourdough for our next visit!
You can also buy Mint Cakery’s cupcakes every Friday night at the Mount Albert night market from 5pm-9pm.
