Apparently Best Ugly Bagels are churning out the best bagels in Auckland. After our breakfast visit there, we’d have to agree!
We paid a visit to the Newmarket branch – the other branch is in the City Works Depot on Wellesley Street. Urban, industrial and achingly hipster the vibe is loud, noisy and a flurry of activity (in a good way!). You order at the counter and your order is shouted to the kitchen where they are cooking bagels in their huge industrial oven. The place is a hive of activity and you are in the middle of all the action with the big open kitchen.
The bagels are hand rolled and this is where the name ‘Best Ugly Bagels’ comes from. This is because due to the hand rolling the bagels aren’t a perfect round shape like a factory machine would produce. The style comes from Montreal on the east coast of Canada and after being hand rolled they are simmered in sweet honey water. The huge open oven cooks the bagels over Manuka hard wood.
Our favourite was the King Salmon – Stewart Island salmon, Zany Zeus cream cheese, red onion, capers, dill and lemon juice. The flavours were balanced perfectly. The ratio of salmon to cream cheese was judged just right and everything was so fresh and clean tasting. This one was definitely a winner.
Next up was Tomato, Hummus and Basil. Simple but done incredibly well. Light, fresh and a real taste of summer on this cold Auckland day.
Last up was the Tuna Melt – Dolphin friendly tuna, jalapeños, mayo, grilled cheese and salsa fresco was real comfort food. The chewy, crisp bagel topped with the warm tuna underneath a layer of bubbling melted cheese was so so tasty. The jalapeños gave it some heat and the salsa fresca really brought it all together.
