August in Auckland means one thing – Restaurant Month. For the whole of August participating restaurants feature special menus and there are numerous foodie events happening around the city.
We took the opportunity to sample Ebisu’s Restaurant Month menu. For $55 we received four exquisite courses combined with top notch service in a beautiful, serene environment.
Combining both Japanese and European techniques, Ebisu is based on the traditional Izakaya method of dining. Izakaya is a type of informal Japanese gastro pub and Ebisu have combined this with an elegant design full of clean lines and symmetry.
We began with some sparkling Sake and the Angus Beef Tataki with black truffle, soy dressing and spring onion. This was our favourite dish of the night as the meat was fall apart tender and delicate with the soy dressing and spring onion providing acidity and contrast.
The other option for the first course was the Ora King Salmon Tataki with jalapeno dressing and paper thin vegetables. Also delicate, the fish was exceptionally fresh and the jalapeno dressing provided a nice kick.
The second course was Free Range Karaage Chicken with onion pepper dressing. Karaage is a Japanese cooking technique which means food is deep fried in oil. The chicken was moist and the crunch of the batter was just perfect.
The third course was Wakanui Scotch Fillet with ponzu , wafu dressing and sesame sauce. Cooked to a perfect medium consistency, the fillet wasn’t as tender as the first course’s beef but was still beautifully cooked. It was also really nice to have the option of the three different sauces.
The other option for the third course was the Miso Glazed Warehou with cauliflower puree, pickles and daikon.
We ended the meal with a lovely little serving of Vanilla Ice Cream. We thought this menu was outstanding value for the quality of the food and the ambiance of this fantastic restaurant. There is also the option to do a wine pairing with the Restaurant Month menu.
