Federal Street in the central city is just bursting with foodie delights just waiting to tempt you. Which one will you choose? From Tapas to Japanese to Italian the choices are endless. But how about an oyster bar?
Depot Oyster Bar is the brainchild of chef Al Brown and is a fast paced place to grab a bite. Getting a table is a bit of a challenge but we assure you it is worth the wait. A busy, bustling atmosphere awaits you when you walk in and we suggest you try as much of the menu as you can and share amongst friends.
We sampled the Kingfish Sashimi which was incredibly fresh and light. The kingfish was marinated in an oyster cream and served with apple and fennel seed. A great dish to kick off with before moving on to heavier items on the menu.
Massimo’s Burrata with tomato dressing, basil and ciabatta croutons was a win for us. We can never see burrata on a menu and not order it and this one was creamy and whipped to perfection. The ciabatta croutons added a nice texture change against the softness of the cheese.
Have you ever seen such a beautiful platter? If you have seen one to rival this beauty then please share with us as this is the best we’ve come across. The NZ Meat Board comes with wild rabbit rillettes and pigs head croquettes which are salty and moreish. Waikanae wild pork salami is joined by beef bresaola and paprika pork lomo.
The meat is accompanied by a delicious cherry relish and a fig and fennel crostini. Honourable mention must also go to the pickles and the mustard which proved a pefect accompaniment to the meat.
From the ‘sides’ section of the menu we went for the potato skins served topped with Kingsmeade pecorino cheese and coated in porcini salt. They were very crisp and piping hot with a fluffy centre. Super delicious!
Who said corn needs to be boring? This one certainly wasn’t as it came topped with parmesan and was perfectly charred.
We definitely also recommend starting with a dozen oysters. They are as fresh as they come here and you can choose between Te Kouma, Bluff and Tio Petites.
