We were recently invited to check out a Thai restaurant in Devonport and as big lovers of Thai cuisine, we immediately accepted.
We were greeted warmly by The Taste’s director, Michael Khuwattanasenee. Primarily a takeaway, there are a couple of small tables inside if you’d like to dine in. We were lucky enough to nab one of the tables and we loved being able to see into the open kitchen where the chef’s were hard at work.
The Taste has been in operation since May 2014 and it is a family enterprise. With more than ten years in the hospitality industry, the family focuses on offering quality ingredients at reasonable prices such as free range chicken and rice bran oil. The style of food is of the Bangkok region of Thailand.
We began with the Vegetarian Spring Rolls which were served with a Thai sweet chilli dipping sauce. These were piping hot, crispy and bursting with flavour.
Next we went for the Chicken Satay which was one of the best we’ve had in Auckland. Three skewers of chicken breast marinated in Thai herbs and pan grilled, the chicken was tender and the satay sauce was crunchy and plentiful.
The sign of a good Thai restaurant is it’s pad thai offering and we went for the Prawn Pad Thai which consisted of crispy fried rice noodles, scrambled egg, bean sprouts, crushed peanuts and a tamarind sauce. The prawns were cooked to perfection and all of the elements were balanced expertly.
The Green Curry with beef was topped with a seasonal selection of vegetables and was made with green curry paste, vegetables and coconut milk. Very tasty.
Our favourite dish of the evening was the King Prawn Panang Curry which was full of flavour and a rich, coconut cream based sauce.
The Duck Red Curry consisted of tender duck cooked in a red curry paste blended with coconut milk, tomatoes, pineapple and vegetables. The duck fell apart it was so tender and really soaked up all the juices of the curry sauce.
We really enjoyed The Taste and are very jealous if you are a Devonport resident as it is so close!
