The Bluestone Room

We all live busy lives and sometimes we just want good food that’s served quickly. Enter The Bluestone Room – they have launched a new Express Menu and invited us down to sample the offerings.

Starting its life as a 19th century warehouse the building marries old and new beautifully. Native Kauri ceiling beams and volcanic stone walls sit alongside a well from 1841 which was built to sustain the thirst of Auckland’s first settlers.

The Bluestone Room also serves as a function space which is situated upstairs from the bar area. It is a very popular wedding venue.

The bar was bustling and lively when we arrived on a Friday evening – it had a really great atmosphere.

The Express Menu features lots of favourites such as fish and chips, burgers and tacos. A fun part of the Express Menu is the way in which the food is served. Everything comes wrapped in paper just like at a fish and chip shop.

It was great fun unwrapping each packet as each dish was brought to the table.

We began with the Jalapeno Poppers which came coated in panko breadcrumbs and filled with hot, oozing cheese. They were definitely spicy but we love a bit of spice so they were perfect for us. The cooling dip they came with worked well to balance the spiciness.

The Bluestone Burger was everything you want a burger to be. Two juicy beef patties covered in aged cheddar cheese, bacon, egg, lettuce, tomato, pickle relish and aioli.

We accompanied this with two different types of fries. We had both the steak fries and the kumara fries. Both were delicious but the kumara fries just had the edge.

For the pescatarian amongst us we had the Shrimpy Boy which consisted of deep fried shrimp covered in a warm seafood sauce and served in a crusty roll. The shrimp was cooked perfectly. So often when shrimp is deep fried it becomes rubbery in texture but that wasn’t the case here.

We finished with the Spicy Chicken Tenders with a bacon, coleslaw and ranch dressing. The chicken was soft and succulent and the ranch dip was decadent and rich.

If you are in the city centre and looking for some comfort food and you want it fast, we couldn’t recommend the Express Menu at The Bluestone Room more.
